dare to lead™

Based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown, Dare to Lead™ is an empirically based courage building program designed to be facilitated by organizational development professionals.

The most significant finding from Brené’s latest research is that courage is a collection of four skill sets that are teachable, measurable, and observable. The Dare to Lead™ program focuses on developing these courage building skills through workshops, trainings, and coaching to help individuals, teams, and organizations move from armored leadership to daring leadership.

courageous leadership

I define courage as doing the thing you don’t want to do that you know needs to be done. When we think of courage we often think of people running into buildings, risking life and limb, going to war. A former colleague once told me I inspired her to do hard things, to speak up during hard decisions on topics she used to be silent on after seeing me navigate office politics and risk being the only one to speak what was not being said. She called me fearless. She was wrong. Each act to choose values, take a career or financial risk, and do what you believe is right despite your fear is courage. Madiba famously said, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” The absence of fear is not courage. The absence of fear is unrealistic!

What does courage have to do with leadership? Everything. It takes courage to align values with behavior, to shift the status quo, build cultures of inclusion and improve diversity. It takes courage to lead effectively and inclusively. It takes courage to choose authenticity. It takes courage to lead high performing teams and create workplaces where teams reach their highest goals.

inclusion, diversity, Equity and belonging

Where two or more people are gathered, diversity is in the room. This is a fundamental belief that I work from. Diversity is a reality of humanity. We each bring our differences to all our interactions. Our lived experiences are shaped by our diversity and in turn those experiences shape how we think, judge, what we value and how we navigate the core human needs of belonging, connection, freedom, and love. Harnessing our differences, our beautiful diversity, requires bridging differences, and cultivating inclusion and belonging. Whether it is a pipeline program, a development program for mid-career professionals, a team leadership program, training for small or large groups, we are able to craft solutions to meet your needs. Showing up as our true authentic selves is one of the most powerful things we can ever do. We are at our best as leaders, parents, colleagues when we are authentic. Our authenticity is often covered under layers of expectations, rules, our responses to bias and oppression, our shame shields, and our traumas. The journey toward authenticity, the practice of authenticity, is a restoration process.
